Transmission, reflection and scattering characterisation of building materials for indoor THz communications

The future communication technologies are naturally evolving towards higher carrier frequencies in order to satisfy the demand for increasing data rates. Terahertz appear make high speed and rate communications possible. However, due free-space damping above 100 GHz, systems limited short range, seldom, non-line-of-sight transmission links which rely mostly on reflection properties of walls other surfaces. We have investigated scattering coefficients a representative collection fifty building materials used construction. optical samples were measured using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy modeled based Fresnel-Rayleigh equations Kirchhoff theory. proposed Kirchhoff-Rayleigh approach is appropriate characterisation rough surfaces with limitations resolve complex structure. Nonetheless, show potential commonly found indoor environments, giving important insight into further modeling THz channels.
